Hippocrates Health Institute - Healing Our World

Wheatgrass juice was chosen for its healing properties by Hippocrates founder Ann Wigmore (and her cat) almost 50 years ago and remains an integral part of our programs. In our programs, the juice is consumed orally, and used in enemas and rectal implants.

Wheatgrass is a blood purifier, cleanser, and detoxifier. It contains chlorophyll, which helps carry oxygen to every cell in your body. Oxygen in the body's cells helps fight off disease, harmful bacteria, and cancer (see books written by Brian Clement or Ann Wigmore for more information). Wheatgrass must be "squeezed" or juiced in order for the body to assimilate its nutrients; so, unlike sunflower and pea green sprouts, it is not appropriate to add it to a salad.

Wheatgrass Juice and Wheat Allergies
Wheatgrass is grown from the wheat seed or berry which is farmed widely in almost every US state and around the globe. People with wheat allergies need not be concerned when consuming wheatgrass juice. Wheatgrass is a leafy green and is different altogether from the grain and refined grain products that people often develop allergies to. Wheatgrass does not contain the gluten found in the grain, which is the component of wheat often causing people problems. Please visit www.sproutman.com for detailed proof and research reguarding wheatgrass and sprouts.  Grass is also a complete protein when grown in a soil base. There is also plenty of protein in a proper raw vegetarian diet, and it is digestible protein.

We Test Our Seeds for Quality

Wheat berries closeup Wheat is an annual seed and will not grow back every time it is cut like your lawn does, but it will propagate its seed when grown to maturity. There are many, many wheat varieties grown by farmers all across the US. That is why we test all of the various seeds, year round, for the best growing quality. Hippocrates founder Ann Wigmore chose wheat because it has a more palatable taste than most other grasses. Try our grass and see if it is not the best. You will taste the difference!  A quick tip on the taste: If the juice is bitter, or causes nausea, it might be OLD or under watered.  Wheatgrass needs to be harvested at a certian time, all at once.  Please visit our FAQ page or Michael for more info.

How to Drink It
Hippocrates suggests drinking wheatgrass juice in small amounts throughout the course of the day, always on an empty or nearly empty stomach. In general, two to four ounces every day or every other day is sufficient. Slowly sipping small quantities of the juice gives your body an opportunity to get used to its taste and effects. Taking one-ounce- to two-ounce drinks straight or mixed with other juices (Greens only) and sipping slowly will help prevent nausea or stomach upset. On a healing regime, we suggest you drink one or two ounces up to three or four times a day with one day of rest periodically. As a general rule, more is not better.  Two ounces at any one given time is all any one person will need.
